Functional classification of research activity

Research activity should be evaluated separately from the other functions of the scientific community. For knowledge of the real world, what matters is what actually determines scientific decisions: the content of the problem, evidence and arguments, or external circumstances such as career, hierarchy, funding, reputation and institutional interests.

For discussions about frozars, the same criteria must be applied to every side. Neither membership in the scientific majority nor opposition to it is evidence. Initial principles, correctness of derivations, initial and boundary conditions, reproducibility of consequences and response to detected contradictions must be checked.

Three modes of research activity

The classification concerns the research function, not profession, rank or a person’s place in the scientific community. The same person may act independently in one situation and dependently in another.

Independent researcher

Priority of the research conclusion

Formulates and solves the problem primarily from its scientific content. Uses accumulated knowledge and consensus as working resources, not as proof. Can work within a paradigm and, when evidence requires it, reconsider its foundations.

From local to historically maximal. A successful fundamental revision may lead to a new theory, a paradigm shift or a scientific revolution.

Dependent researcher

Influence of external circumstances

Problem choice, interpretation, publication, response to criticism or admission of error are substantially influenced by circumstances external to the research problem: career, hierarchy, funding, institutional interests or reputation.

High to very high in ordinary scientific work. It supplies much of the accumulation, testing, refinement and application of knowledge; reliability decreases when external interests conflict with the substantive conclusion.

Pseudoscientific researcher

Protection of a claim from testing

Defined not by making an error, lacking a degree or disagreeing with a majority, but by systematically shielding a claim from procedures capable of revealing and correcting error: ignoring counterexamples, replacing argument with status, or refusing to correct a testable error.

Zero or negative while the claim is protected from full independent testing.
What “dependent” means. Employment, grants, institutional rules and shared infrastructure are epistemically neutral in themselves. Dependence becomes methodologically significant only when external circumstances begin to determine scientific judgment.
Scientific community and dependence are not the same thing. Membership in the scientific community does not make a researcher dependent by definition. An independent researcher may also hold a position, receive funding and work in a large collaboration.
Key distinction. A dependent researcher is not pseudoscientific by definition. Error is compatible with science. The pseudoscientific function begins where a claim is systematically shielded from substantive testing and correction.

Criteria for evaluating the research function

1. Connection to realityA claim should concern observable objects, processes or testable consequences.
2. TestabilityIt should be clear what supports the conclusion and what could show it to be wrong.
3. Reproducibility of the argumentAnother competent researcher should be able to reconstruct the assumptions, reasoning and result.
4. Independence of scientific judgmentWhen a result conflicts with external interests, what actually receives priority must be distinguished.
5. Evidence above authority and consensusPosition, prizes, journal prestige, school and number of supporters may be social indicators, but they are not proofs.
6. Work with errorsScientific practice searches for and corrects errors; systematic refusal to correct a testable error moves activity toward a pseudoscientific function.

Science needs institutions; knowledge needs independent testing

Institutional organization makes modern science possible, but it also creates mechanisms of external dependence. Therefore, when a concrete claim is evaluated, the decisive issue is not the researcher’s position in the community but the possibility of independent substantive testing of the conclusion.
